What is Genre?

Genres are various types of categories, class or group on which a film is being shot for e.g (Romantic, historical, sci-fi, horror, thriller etc). It is instantly recognizable for audience to judge what kind of a film they are watching. In modern day film making and with the help of advance technologies, film genres are many. Because of the demand of the audiences, filmmakers opt for the most suitable type of genre to present to the audience.

Genres provide a convenient way for scriptwriters and filmmakers to produce, cast and structure their narratives within a manageable, well-defined framework.

Genres differ in the film industries.

Hollywood mainly focuses on action/sci-fi and superhero movies due to the demand of audiences. These types of genre do well in the Hollywood box office. Whereas in Bollywood film industry the genre that has being followed from late 90’s is romantic/drama or romantic comedy. However due to the advance technologies nowadays, bollywood is nowhere behind in making good action and superhero movies like “krishh” etc which were box office hit.

There is no set limit for genres in the Industry. Anything technically possible and critically acceptable can be termed as genre in the film industry. For example if we take a look at the classic style action movies, nobody thought that action can be merged with science fiction movies and turn it into scifi action film with help of CG and VFX in modern cinema.

Each genre requires deep study. It has its own requirements from story till production and even casting. Narratives are different and from budgeting till business, everything is very different.

Genre of my Films?

As a producer and creative student, I more likely prefer writing content which is not only easy to execute but has an emotional impact on the audiences. As I take inspiration from Anurag Kashyup a Hindi cinema film director who merges romance with dark realities of the world. He tries to execute film as simply as possible. It has its own feel! I prefer writing dark realities of our society and existing issues making sure to portray with available resources. Just like that my film features a story of a boy who left abandoned after his parents gets divorced and he forcefully has to move outside country to have a better life. The genre has a very emotional side and light touch or moral on how an incident can scar someone for life. How leaving a homeland and loved ones can be the worst things to experience and how mother is so much important in ones life.
